Groceries

I really ought to brush my teeth and get ready for work, but I'm doing this instead...

1. Hire High School Girls
2. Out of the Frying Pan (& Into the Eighties)

Note to people forming bands : When deciding on what to name your band, you might want to consider something uncommon so that in the future if for whatever reason, somebody wants to look up information about your musical activities they might discover them rather than scroll pointlessly through pages of crap based around the extremely common word you've decided on.

1. Are You Here
2. Baby, You're a Rich Man

I assume these guys were from NJ and that this is the follow up to the previous effort.

10 What the cool kids are saying:

  1. Liked the first single, but the track Are You Here just won't download for me . . . it's a shame.

  2. Looks like Mediafire is doing some sort of maintenance. I'll check back tomorrow and if it's still being weird I reup the track.

  3. Reupped. It should work now. (or at least it did for me just now.

  4. Well, you are quite right about the name Groceries. I for one, am sorry we chose it, and, damn it, I was the one who came up with it! At the time, it seemed clever and offbeat, but, like just about EVERYTHING about the 80's, it sucks now. However, I can illuminate a bit about the band if you're interested: We were 4 Princeton grads (Rich Lather, bass, lead vocals, Greg Frey, guitar and vox, Andy Gomory, keyboards and vox and Mike Steelman, lead guitar) and one art school dude (me, Max Crandall, drums), who got together in the summer of '79, and for five years did pretty well on the NJ/Philly/NYC college and club circuit. We were the house band at City Gardens in Trenton, where we played every Wed. for 18 months, as well as opening for a remarkable number of up and coming New Wave acts, such as Flock of Seagulls, Gang of Four, Wall of Voodoo, Bow Wow Wow, Thompson Twins, etc. "Hire HS Girls" was our 1st single, followed by "Are You Here". We then released an EP with 6 songs (self-titled) and finally, an LP gathering together the last recordings we made(1984)as well as all the left over stuff dating back to '79. If anybody's interested, I can upload all that stuff. I think we got kind of better before we called it a day. See what you think. Also, as far as where we are today, I think it's safe to say that Rich "Luxurious" Lather (Richard Morse) has had the most, let's say interesting, career . . . Look up Richard Auguste Morse at Wikipedia and then look for recordings by RAM. —Regards, and thanks for keeping our little artifact alive! Max Crandall, drums

  5. Hey Max,

Nice to hear from an actual band member with the skinny. There's so little information around about so many bands. I have no doubt that folks would love to hear the rest of the Groceries discography. I know I would.

  6. Hey Lanark,

Here's just about everything we did in the studio. The first six songs included in the download comprised our EP, followed by our 10 song LP entitled "Are You Here?". Also included are the HHSG single and just the B side to "Are You Here?" Get yer 80's on, dudes!

  7. Wow, Max Crandall - Max, I was a huge Groceries fan back in the day, I went to Princeton High School and I went to every Groceries gig I could get into. You guys were killer, and listening back to it your drumming was incredible, very driving. I was friends with some architects who I think knew you guys (Rafi Sharon, Larry and Sharon Taratino). Because of that I have some live recordings of you including what sounds like a pretty early one. I'm thinking of posting on YouTube when I get time (just got them digitized). I'd of course be happy to share with you if you wanted them!

Thanks for posting all that stuff, I have the "Are You Here" and the LP but not the other stuff. I also have a bunch of stuff by Regressive Aid, Lunchmeat 2000 (Groceries + R.A.?), etc.

I recently posted some comments on YouTube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqkd7jDksqM

    You guys were great!

    Best, Eric

    1. Hi. Is there a way I could get the Lunchmeat 2000 tracks?

      Thanks,
      Douglass.
